New Japanese Fabric

Japanese fabric

Hi guys! Sorry for not posting in so long!
Simply one word to excuse: Busy.

I haven't had much time to get crafty for quite a while,
but I wanted to show my new Japanese fabric stash
little quick before I fly over to Yakima in Washington.

I bought some Japanese fabric online and my friend brought
it with her when she came over here in San Jose from Japan.

Japanese fabric

This is what I got from Japanese Yahoo auction.
A set of white and orange with the same pattern.
When I saw this entry, I knew there would be no way
whatsoever to let it go. Then I happened to win it ;)
This is by a fabric designer Kumiko Fujita who's
written AWESOME patchwork books including this.

Japanese fabric

I love this design too. Can you believe this was on sale?
Plastic bag dispenser? Oven mitt? Place mat?
Anything would be cute.....

Japanese fabric

This is a very nice one by Yuwa.
I wanted to show you all the fabric, but not all
pictures turned out great, so let me stop at this moment.

Some Good News... ;)

1) I'm having fun with my friend from Japan!

Santana row

I took her to Anthropologie in San Jose yesterday.
It's one of my favorite shops in America (although it does
not mean I can afford lots of things sadly, haha.)

anthropologie

My friend loving the cute collection of oven mitts and aprons.
Every time I come here, I get inspired so much that I always
feel like going home asap to have a go at sewing!
For whoever designs for this shop, I give a huge credit
and many thanks for the inspiration.

2) Some of my tutorials will be introduced in
2010 calenders published by Accord Publishing!

I'm sure you've seen this type of calenders if you live
in the states. There will be "sewing" version coming up and
three tutorials of mine which I've introduced in this blog will be
on the 2010 calender! Super Excited. Super!!!

3) I bought a new camera: Nikon D40!

I was ready to move onto a new camera a year and a half ago
when I dropped my old one on concrete and its display light
stopped working. So glad now that I got a new one which is
a million times better in quality of pictures. (Can you tell
from these pictures on this entry? ;) )

4) My fall semester will be over in just 3 weeks!!

Can't wait to put away all the textbooks and enjoy sewing
without "guilt". Yes! I have to finish up the penguin quilt!!

Little Logcabin Bag

Hi all! I hope you're all having great weekends.

I spent a lot of time sewing last week. I realized I am doing
pretty good this semester and thought to give myself some
reward: time to sew;) This little bag is what I made today.
One of my friends is coming to visit me from Japan in later this
month. She will be my 6th friend to fly over to see me since I
moved down to California last year. I am such a lucky girl to be
visited so often. I always get excited about my buddies coming over.

I make it a point to make my friends some sort of handmade gifts
when they come over here, hoping that the gifts can be parts of
their memories of journeys. So, this logcabin bag is going to be hers!

My calculation was off. I thought I cut out pieces of fabric
just enough to make a bag, but there was excess, so...

Logcabin Drawstring Bag

with the rest of the fabric pieces, I made two coasters!
I really like how both the bag and the coasters turned out,
and I have a pretty good feeling that my friend will like them too;)

Got these feet!

Oh! Here comes good news!! I bought the feet for my sewing machine!
Yaaaaaaaay!! Thanks so much for those of you who gave me advice on
how to look for them. I ended up buying them online from SewShop.com.
I highly recommend this shop. I ordered my feet Monday night, and
they were in the mail box on Thursday. Super fast delivery!
(and it was free shipping!)

Penguin Quilt

So the penguin quilt is almost ready to be quilted!
I am thrilled as it's getting closer and closer to
be a completed quilt. My old digital camera is not
very nice when I take pictures of objects that are big.
(as you can see how low quality this picture is).
My friend who's got a nice SLR camera will be so nice to take
some shots of this penguin quilt for me once I finish it up.
I am really excited about that too;)

I have some links to nice fabric baskets again!

Penguin Quilt in progress

Penguin Quilt in progress
One more border added!
These four blocks are my favorite ones among 9 blocks.

Penguin Quilt in progress

Overall, it looks like this so far.
In retrospect, I should have chosen fabric with stronger impact
for the last borders of the orange and brown blocks to nicely
match with other blocks, but I guess I'll see how it goes with this.

I now know 90% of the result of this project. I'll add another border
for each block, which will be the same dark blue polka dots fabric I used
around the penguin fabric. Then, I'll attach sashing separating all the
blocks and surrounding them. I'm debating on sashing: either very light
pink fabric, white, or beige linen. Then, I'll do machine-quilting ;)
I bought a darning foot at Joann yesterday but it didn't fit my sewing
machine;( .. I have to find a walking foot and darning foot that
work for my Singer Quantum 9910. Lastly, I'll finish up this
mini quilt with a dark pink binding tape.

Penguin Quilt in progress

I can barely wait to see the finished quilt on the wall
next to my crafting table! But what I can't wait even more
is to start working on a new quilt! I am going to make one
that will be hung up above the couch in the living room.
But what I seriously can not wait is for this semester to
be over..Bottom line..! I dream about working with my sewing
machine with no worry whatsoever about school work during
the Winter vacation. Oh my..it will be heaven! Time, Please fly!!
